Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, told Newsmax on Monday that "personality-driven" politics is the main culprit behind the political divisiveness in the United States.
However, on the eve of the presidential election, Cornyn said that's for another time; Republican voters need to turn out to the polls on Tuesday to get GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump elected.
"Well, it seems to me like a lot of our politics these days are more personality-driven rather than policy-driven," Cornyn told "The Record With Greta Van Susteren." "But the fact of the matter is, there's a huge policy differential between what President Trump presided over during his first term and what I believe he would be like in a second term.
"And the path that we are on under the Biden-Harris administration, which if you believe the polls, and I do, the vast majority of people believe the country is heading in the wrong direction. But this is perhaps something for a PhD dissertation, you know, why is it that people are so divided? But it's all going to come down to who shows up at the polling place tomorrow," he added.
Cornyn is running to become the Senate GOP leader to replace outgoing Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. One key to being the majority leader in the next Congress, should Cornyn win his own vote over Sens. John Thune, R-S.D., and Rick Scott, R-Fla., is the victory of his fellow Republican Texas Sen. Ted Cruz on Tuesday.
"I told Ted months ago, I said, the good news is, Ted, you're going to win. The bad news is, it's going to be one of the most expensive Senate races in Texas history," Cornyn told Van Susteren. "But the good news is, is Ted's going to win. President Trump's going to carry the state.
"The Democrats keep hoping for, they have this pipe dream of Texas turning blue. But it's not going to happen this year and it's not gonna happen anytime soon."
