The Department of Justice could have found a less intrusive way to get the documents from former President Donald Trump's home than staging an FBI raid, Rep. Ken Buck said on Newsmax Wednesday after the release of a photo showing materials seized in the raid, including some that were marked with security clearance warnings.
"It's clear from how they handled the Hillary Clinton situation a few years ago that the FBI has other ways of dealing with a former president, or, in that case, a former secretary of state, who had documents," the Colorado Republican commented on Newsmax's "National Report."
"I think it's really important to make sure the American people feel that the FBI and the Department of Justice is not partisan, is not picking sides, and is not treating President Trump differently than Secretary Clinton," Buck continued.
Meanwhile, Buck said he has not yet seen evidence that Trump has undergone the process that he needs to declassify documents, as it's not yet known what's in the materials that were seized. However, often conversations are covered by executive privilege while not necessarily being classified, he noted.
Buck also responded to a new Rasmussen poll showing 50% of Americans give President Joe Biden poor ratings for his handling of immigration. The survey also shows that 54% say illegal immigration is getting worse, and 45% said the subject will be important in the upcoming midterm election.
"I think it's absolutely disgraceful," said Buck, adding that Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas should either resign or Biden should fire him.
"We've never seen a situation where an individual who has been charged with enforcing the law has walked away from his responsibilities," said Buck. "President Trump's administration showed us exactly what was needed to have a border that was secure."
All the steps Trump took, including agreements with Guatemala and Honduras, and the remain in Mexico policy, have been undone, leaving the disaster at the southern border.
"I was down at the southern border several months ago with my friend, Congressman Andy Biggs," said Buck. "It's clear that there is a humanitarian crisis.
"It's clear that we have large quantities of fentanyl crossing the border. The Democrats don't want to criticize their own president, but they realized that it's hypocritical to say that they have a heart for these people and the difficult economic situation that they're in with their home countries and at the same time not recognize the terrible evils that are being perpetrated on these people as they try to come into this country."
