Rep. Kevin Kiley, R-Calif., told Newsmax on Wednesday that the network's removal from DirecTV's lineup "is part of a troubling trend of simply deplatforming viewpoints that those in power don't like."
Kiley said on "John Bachman Now" that "we've seen that in a whole host of ways. I mean, if you saw the hearings that … we had last week on Capitol Hill involving executives at Twitter, and of course, we've all been reading the Twitter Files and what Newsmax is dealing with, what universities have had happening on their campuses for some time."
"Not to mention the rest of Big Tech and this whole cancel culture has sort of, you know, permeated in all facets of social life now, and it is a very dangerous thing. I mean, nothing could be more antithetical to America's core principles … all about freedom of speech, of free expression, of all ideas."

The congressman added, "Of course the founders didn't have satellite television, but they did understand the importance of allowing free speech to flourish, given whatever the medium of communication was at the time. That's why they created a First Amendment that allows for free speech that's not fixed to any given medium, but that is an expansive right, that is an absolute right except for the very narrow exceptions the Supreme Court has carved out."
He added, "Beyond just the legal requirements of the First Amendment there's the spirit of the First Amendment as well, which is that those of us in public office need to do whatever we can to encourage the free flow of ideas. And so this is just another example of this very troubling trend."
