The removal of Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker is an “abomination,” and the eight Republicans behind it are an “embarrassment and a disgrace to the party and the institution itself,” says Rep. Mike Lawler, R.-N.Y.

“The fact is you had eight Republicans team up with 208 House Democrats, including AOC, Ilhan Omar, Jaamal Bowman, Adam Schiff, and Hakeem Jeffries to remove a duly elected House Republican speaker and upend the House Republican majority,” Lawler said during an appearance Wednesday on Newsmax TV’s “National Report.”

“They torpedoed everything we’ve been working on. They decried the fact that we hadn’t passed all 12 appropriations bills. You can kiss that goodbye. They just derailed everything we are doing, the crisis at the southern border, the challenges with spending, all because of petty personal grievances. They are an embarrassment and a disgrace to the party and to the institution itself.”

The U.S  House of Representatives on Tuesday for the first time in history voted to remove its leader.

McCarthy’s demise reflects the deep polarization in Congress, including among Republicans.

Lawler said the eight Republicans who voted with Democrats to oust McCarthy have been problematic since they were voted into office.

“The first nine months they refused to cooperate as a team, refused to compromise within the conference. They have undermined the very majority that the American people elected, and they elected us to serve as a check and balance on the Biden agenda to reign in wasteful spending,” he told Newsmax.

“We had a conservative CR that would have cut spending by 8% and secured the border and seven of these eight folks voted against it. They're not conservative. They've bamboozled a lot of folks … into believing that they are standing up for conservatism. They literally just destroyed it in one fell swoop by teaming up with Hakeem Jeffries and the Democrats.

“Even if you didn't like the job Kevin McCarthy was doing, even if you disagreed with certain policy decisions that he was making, the idea that 208 democrats would team up with eight Republicans to remove the duly elected house republican speaker is shameful.”
