Rep. Michael Cloud, R-Texas, emphasized the importance of Republican senators uniting to confirm President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet nominees without delay, highlighting their alignment with Trump's "America First" mandate during an appearance on Newsmax on Monday.
Rep. Cloud urged Senate Republicans to quickly confirm the President-elect's cabinet nominees, criticizing past approval of Biden administration officials while calling for decisive support of Trump's appointees.
Appearing Monday on "The Chris Salcedo Show," Cloud was asked whether GOP senators who had backed President Joe Biden's diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) nominees had any justification for opposing Trump's picks.
"When you see the people they were willing to approve for the Biden administration, you have the HHS secretary [Xavier Becerra] who is not the epitome of health by any sort of means. You have [Secretary of Defense Lloyd] Austin, who went MIA for a little while and was responsible for Afghanistan. You have [Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro] Mayorkas, who was impeached because he did a horrible job securing the border, and you can go down the list," Cloud said.
"Now, when it comes to the people that President Trump is nominating, this should be easy. This should not be a conversation," he added.
"Even these [nominations] should go quickly. They should be in office by the time the president is sworn in, and we should hit the ground running," Cloud said.
Cloud framed Trump's presidency as a clear mandate for change and described his nominees as individuals who reflect that mission.
"Hopefully, that happens. I'm still holding out hope that people wise up to it in the Senate and do the right thing here, especially understanding their role with this president," Cloud said.
"He was handed a mandate, and it wasn't a mandate to continue to carry water for the swamp. It was a mandate to come and bring drastic change to Washington on behalf of the people," Cloud added. "The people he's nominating are these kinds of people. And the Senate would be wise and do the right thing and heed the call of the American people," he said.
