The recourse when people like former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi show disrespect and irreverence to the church is to "issue a notification that she's not to be admitted to Communion," San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone told Newsmax.

"Now, if a minister, a priest or a lay minister giving Communion were to give her Communion, it's up to the local bishop to decide how to handle that," Cordileone told Newsmax's "The Chris Salcedo Show."

"Such a person can be reprimanded. The canon law of the church allows for that to happen. They can be punished by a just penalty. Usually, there's a warning first, but it's up to the local bishop to decide how to handle it, if someone in his diocese gives her Communion," he added.

"So, there are means available. The local bishop has to decide if and how and to what extent to apply them."

Cordileone in 2022 prohibited Pelosi from receiving holy Communion because of her public position on abortion. She has sought to overturn the Communion ban, such recourse is no longer available to her, reports the Catholic News Agency.
