Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., praised President Donald Trump's latest border security actions on Newsmax on Monday, calling them a "wonderful day of winning for the American people."
Malliotakis, a House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure member, said she strongly supports Trump's recent efforts to secure the U.S. border with Mexico and Canada. She says his leadership has put America in a "much better situation" than under former President Joe Biden.
During an appearance on "Rob Schmitt Tonight," Malliotakis credited Trump's negotiation tactics for securing cooperation from both Mexico and Canada to combat illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
"What President Trump did today was absolutely amazing, and I think it stunned people like [Senate Minority Leader] Chuck Schumer, who did these press conferences saying it was going to be basically the end of the world, that we were going to have all these rising prices," Malliotakis said. "But President Trump knew what he was doing. He was the art of the deal."
"In less than 24 hours, what did we achieve? He got 10,000 Mexican troops that will go to our border. You have Canada joining us and [designating] the cartels, terrorist organizations," Malliotakis said. "And a fentanyl czar will also be named there [in Canada]. And other investments that are being made from these two countries to help save American lives."
Malliotakis contrasted Trump's latest actions with Biden's border policies, arguing that the previous administration had allowed cartels to "control our southern border" and facilitate the smuggling of fentanyl and other deadly drugs.
"We are in a much better situation today than we were during the last four years under President Joe Biden, who allowed it to be a free-for-all, enrich the drug cartels, and allowed them to have access and basically control our southern border," she said.
Trump agreed Monday to a 30-day pause on tariff threats against Mexico and Canada as part of the agreement, Military.com reported. The move came after the two neighboring countries took steps to address his concerns over border security and drug trafficking.
"It is really a wonderful day of winning for the American people," Malliotakis said. "And I'm very proud of President Trump."
