Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., told Newsmax on Tuesday that he's "always supported increasing security of schools" and pushed back on calls for increased gun safety regulations after a fatal school shooting in Madison, Wisconsin.
According to local police, a 15-year-old student at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison shot and killed another student and a teacher Monday.
President Joe Biden, in a statement expressing condolences to the victims, said: "From Newtown to Uvalde, Parkland to Madison, to so many other shootings that don't receive attention — it is unacceptable that we are unable to protect our children from this scourge of gun violence. We cannot continue to accept it as normal."
Biden called for "common sense gun safety laws" including "universal background checks. A national red flag law. A ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazine."
Johnson, appearing on "Wake Up America," responded: "I don't even want to comment on it. ... Let's wait to see exactly what happens. There's no justification for this. Obviously, this is a … mentally troubled youth and she acted out and people lost their lives, including herself."
The senator added: "Let's keep everybody in our prayers, that's what the community is asking for; let's see what the details are, and let's see if there's something we can do positively. I've always supported increasing security of schools. That's what we've learned from these past shootings is heightened security, one door of entrance, everything else are locked.
"Security measures are probably the best thing we can do."
The senator also noted that there are "way more guns out on the streets today than there are U.S. citizens. We have something like 10,000 gun laws. It's not even worth commenting on."
