Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., told Newsmax on Tuesday that the actions of the Jan. 6 Committee and their treatment of President-elect Donald Trump was "bogus."
On Sunday, Trump appeared on "Meet the Press" and was asked to comment on the Jan. 6 Committee and the allegations that some members destroyed evidence. "[Former Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz] Cheney was behind it, and so was [Mississippi Democrat Rep.] Bennie Thompson and everybody on that committee. For what they did, honestly, they should go to jail," Trump said in the interview. Burchett said that the committee was an "illegitimate committee" and they "had no jurisdiction whatsoever."
"And they actually imprisoned [Trump ally] Steve Bannon, if you remember, for failing to show up. So, you know, this thing is bogus. If they destroyed evidence, if they hid evidence, if they mistreated evidence, then yes, they have violated the law. President Trump is correct, and they should go to jail if that is the case," Burchett said during an appearance on "The Chris Salcedo Show."
The congressman from Tennessee went on to caution his fellow Republicans against taking "a victory lap" in the midst of a razor thin House majority.
"They're going to go to their MAGA dinners and talk to all their people back home, and then they're going to come right back down here and sell us down the river. That's why we're 36 trillion in debt. That's why no one fears us right now, because the Republican Party... we're all puffed up. We're doing a dadgum victory lap. We ought to be up here figuring out what we're going to do to fix the problem. We're in the majority right now, and we ought to act like it," Burchett added.
