Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Mich., stressed the importance of Republican unity amid a brewing challenge to House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga.
Speaking to Newsmax on Saturday, Walberg emphasized the need for cohesion within the party.
"No, we need we need to stick together. We only have next week, one vote to spare," Walberg stated on "Wake Up America Weekend."
Walberg, a House Energy and Commerce Committee member, acknowledged Greene's prerogative but highlighted the necessity of offering an alternative to Johnson.
"Marjorie can do what she wants to do, but she has to tell us who would be the speaker under these circumstances," he said. "If you don't have a speaker to offer, then I think you work with the one you have, who has a tremendously tough job to do. He's doing his best. Our team has to work together to prove we can do the job."
Greene's challenge came in the wake of the House's approval of a $1.2 trillion spending package to avert a partial government shutdown. While the bill garnered bipartisan support, Greene opposed it, labeling it a "Democrat-controlled bill" in the GOP-led House, CBS News reported.
On Friday, Greene laid the groundwork for a potential vote to strip Johnson of the gavel, signaling her intent to challenge his leadership. However, she did not provide a specific timeline for when she would bring the motion to vacate to a vote.
"I'm not saying that it won't happen in two weeks, or it won't happen in a month, or who knows when. But I am saying the clock has started," Greene said. "It's time for our conference to choose a new speaker."
