Barbara Jordan (1936-1996) was the first Black woman from a Southern state to be elected to Congress and took a strong stance against illegal immigration at the end of her career.
The Texas daughter of a Baptist minister, she excelled in public speaking and community organizing. As a member of the Massachusetts and Texas bars, she first got involved in politics while registering Black voters for the 1960 presidential campaign.
