This halophilic microbe thrives in warm, brackish coastal waters, especially when temperatures rise. Warm conditions create ideal breeding grounds, which led to 34 confirmed infections in Louisiana, with six deaths so far in 2025 — about double the typical annual toll for this time of the year.
