Donald Trump reportedly will meet with the head of the Secret Service on Monday following a second assassination attempt on the former president's life.

Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, is expected to meet with the Secret Service acting Director Ronald Rowe Jr., The Washington Post reported.

The Secret Service (USSS) on Sunday foiled what the FBI called an apparent assassination attempt on Trump while he was golfing in Florida.

USSS agents fired on a gunman in the bushes after he was spotted near the edge of Trump's West Palm Beach golf course, a few hundred yards from where the former president was playing on Sunday, law enforcement officials said.

The suspect was arrested after fleeing the scene in a vehicle, leaving behind two backpacks and an AK-47-style assault rifle.

The suspect was widely identified in U.S. media as Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, of Hawaii. Late on Sunday, Secret Service and Homeland Security agents searched a home in Greensboro, North Carolina, which had belonged to Routh, a neighbor told Reuters.

It was the second assassination attempt on Trump in two months. He was grazed in the right ear when a gunman fired on him at a campaign rally. That shooter was killed in return fire by security agents.

Lawmakers are asking how Routh managed to get within 500 yards of the former president while armed with an assault rifle, Politico reported.

Sunday night there were bipartisan calls for additional security measures around Trump.

"[Trump should have] the same security levels afforded to a sitting president to ensure his safety," Rep. Nick Langworthy, R-N.Y., said, Politico reported.

"The Secret Service must come to Congress tomorrow, tell us what resources are needed to expand the protective perimeter, & lets allocate it in a bipartisan vote the same day," Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., posted on X.
