Technology research center AllSides has documented political bias in search engine aggregator Google News to favor Vice President Kamala Harris over former President Donald Trump in the months leading up to Election Day.
Google News, one of the most powerful news sources in the world, has been assigned with an AllSides Media Bias Rating of lean left, according the firm. The search engine aggregates news stories from more than 2,200 publications worldwide based on user likes and interests.
The firm collected information on a variety of politically charged topics such as "election news," "abortion news," "Harris news," and "Trump news." The firm found that when searching for "election news," 84% of featured articles were either left or left-leaning in their coverage.
When searching for news on Harris, 73% of articles leaned left and when searching for news on Trump, 68% either were left or left-leaning.
Articles on "gun control" and "immigration news" were found to be the most balanced, with 56% of news about both topics having been labeled left or left-leaning.
Data from the AllSides report was collected between Aug. 14-27 and used a minimum of 40 articles for each keyword.
