Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, has trailed in polls against challenger Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Cornyn, however, is reportedly raising more money.

The Texas Tribune reported that Cornyn raised $1 million more than Paxton in the last financial reporting quarter, which began in April. Cornyn picked up $3.9 million compared to Paxton's $2.9 million.

Paxton announced his challenge in early April to Cornyn's attempt to win a fifth term.

The Tribune reported that the campaign disclosures came just ahead of Tuesday's deadline to reveal financial information, including fundraising and spending, and marked the first time there has been an opportunity to compare how each candidate is doing with donors. Both are waving their conservative flag in an attempt to gain more momentum.

A coveted endorsement from President Donald Trump has not been announced. The Hill reported that Trump met with Senate leaders on Wednesday to talk about campaign strategy, including the Texas race.

Paxton is facing a new element to his campaign after his wife, state Sen. Angela Paxton, filed for divorce on "biblical grounds." The National Republican Senatorial Committee issued a stinging rebuke of Ken Paxton in response. The committee had previously placed its support behind Cornyn, which is typical, as the committee generally supports incumbents.

The Tribune reported that millions more will begin pouring into both campaigns, driven by political action committees in addition to individual supporters. Cornyn needs the financial edge to help with media campaigns to overcome a significant shortfall to Paxton in Texas voter polls. Cornyn has a deficit to overcome that has at times been greater than 15 points.
