Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., on Sunday said he would not back President-elect Donald Trump's plan to eliminate the debt ceiling.

When asked on Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures With Maria Bartiromo" if he would support Trump's plan to eliminate the debt ceiling as part of a larger reconciliation bill that would include funding the border and other policies, the senator responded, "No."

"We absolutely need a debt ceiling limit. Now, I'll negotiate in terms of how far we increase that.

"There are all kinds of things we could do. But it starts with, again, going back to a baseline spending — this reasonable amount — as part of the negotiation on increasing debt limit.

"But we absolutely need that debt limit, or there's no control over out-of-control government spending."

In an opinion piece published by The Wall Street Journal earlier this week, Johnson wrote: "In a sane world, Covid spending levels would have been an extreme aberration, and we would have already returned to a more reasonable level of spending. But we haven't, so let me propose a few of options for doing so."
