Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis rushed to the defense of Donald Trump on Thursday night after the former president said he was indicted for his handling of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate.
DeSantis, who is Trump's chief rival for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, had been trading barbs with Trump on the campaign trail since he announced his candidacy two weeks ago. But DeSantis switched gears and admonished the Biden administration for going after a political opponent.
"The weaponization of federal law enforcement represents a mortal threat to a free society," DeSantis tweeted. "We have for years witnessed an uneven application of the law depending upon political affiliation.
"Why so zealous in pursuing Trump yet so passive about Hillary [Clinton] or Hunter [Biden]?
"The DeSantis administration will bring accountability to the DOJ [Department of Justice], excise political bias and end weaponization once and for all."
Trump is the first sitting or former president to face criminal charges.
