Proposed Senate additions to President Donald Trump's mega tax and spending bill would claw back all funding for electric vehicles and force the U.S. Postal Service to dismantle and sell any current EV vehicle and charging infrastructure, reported The Washington Post.
Congress in 2023 gave the Postal Service $3 billion as part of a $430 billion climate bill to buy EVs and charging infrastructure — including $1.2 billion for electric vehicles.
The Postal Service bought 28,000 vehicles in 2024, 22,000 of them gas powered, and had plans to acquire over 66,000 electric vehicles by 2028.
But the Senate's version of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act includes a provision that would require the General Services Administration to take control of the nearly 7,200 new Postal Service EVs and associated infrastructure, with plans to auction off the assets.
Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., said the provision "aims to cut unnecessary costs and focus USPS on delivering mail and not achieving the environmental initiatives pushed by the Biden administration."
Peter Pastre, the Postal Service's vice president for government relations and public policy, said doing so will "cost the Postal Service $1.5 billion of funds that we desperately need in order to serve the American people, and it will seriously cripple our ability to replace an aging and obsolete delivery fleet."
"We urge the Senate and the committee to pause and consider the substantial harm this proposal would cause to the Postal Service and our customers, your constituents," he said.
