Republican Vice President nominee J.D. Vance reiterated Sunday that Donald Trump does not support and would not impose a national abortion ban.
Further, Vance said that Trump would veto federal legislation banning abortion that might land on his desk should he become president in January.
Sen. Vance, R-Ohio, made the comments in an interview with NBC News’ “Meet The Press’ on Sunday morning.
Trump wanted the abortion issue placed back with the states, which happened when the Supreme Court upended Roe v. Wade in June 2022. Further, Trump has repeatedly said he does not support abortion bans and has chastised states (Florida for example) that have passed strict laws banning abortions after six weeks. Trump's position has put him at odds with groups like Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.
Regardless, Democrats, including presidential nominee Kamala Harris, continue to warn that Trump would ban abortion as president.
Vance said Sunday that he could “absolutely commit” that Trump would not impose federal abortion ban as president.
“Donald Trump has been as clear about that as possible,” Vance told host Kristen Welker. “Donald Trump wants to end the cultural war over this particular topic."
“If California wants to have a different abortion policy from Ohio,” Vance said, “then Ohio has to respect California, and California has to respect Ohio.
"Donald Trump’s view is that we want the individual states and their individual cultures and their unique political sensibilities to make these decisions, because we don’t want to have a nonstop federal conflict over this issue.”
“Let the states figure out their own abortion policy,” Vance said.
Welker then asked if Trump would veto any bill coming from Congress to ban abortion.
“I think he would. He said that explicitly that he would,” Vance said, voicing skepticism that any such bill would come from Republicans in the first place.
“But no Republican, at least no Republican with any reasonable power, is saying that we should have a complete national abortion ban. I haven’t heard that from any of my colleagues," he said.
