The adages are myriad, "Pretty is as pretty does," "God don’t like ugly," and H.G. Wells' "Beauty is in the heart of the beholder."
Democratic members of Congress and some officials whose party allegiance is unknown became even more hideous in the eyes of Americans watching President Donald Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress.
This is despite purported admonitions from Minority Leader Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., to his troupe to "act with dignity."
A noted book of photography, "A Living Lens," by Alana Newhouse (of the famous Newhouse publishing family), features interesting pictures of Jewish life, from the cusp of the 20th century to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. A haunting photo is of Tsar Nicholas II traveling through the town square of Biala, Poland, in 1902.
The Jews of the town lined the streets, removing their religious head coverings out of respect, but the Tsar was caught on camera refusing to acknowledge them.
Flip the roles and you get the lineup of Congress at the aisle where President Trump entered.
Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y. pointed out to Newsmax’s Rob Finnerty that no Democrats joined the traditional escort for the president, for the first time in history.
Neither did they rise for first lady Melania Trump.
This writer's grandfather used to describe girls in our family who were ill-behaved in public. "Dolly (my grandmother) used to take them right into the ladies' room and they’d come out as whole new girls!" he’d laugh.
In the past, members of all stripes would crowd the Capitol rotunda entrance, because they wanted to be part of such an historic event.
Democrats — even those self-identifying as "moderate," refused to look at the president.
Cue shades of Tsar Nicolas II.
Rep. Melanie Stansbury, D-N.M., did herself no favors by holding a sign, "This Is Not Normal," concurrently standing with a blank stare like a cult member.
Would they be willing to greet Trump if they needed FEMA funds?
This was a heightened display of ugliness.
Soon, Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, began disrupting the opening of the president’s speech, yelling, and shaking a menacing cane, until U.S. House Speaker Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., had him tossed out.
Did Green truly believe he was heroic by behaving in a such a way that back in the day, any parent in Texas would have had him "cut his own switch"?
Europeans often say that Americans seem to smile a lot.
The Atlantic had a theory that it evolved as a non-verbal communication in a melting-pot land. But we are also a friendly nation in general with healthy teeth and fluoridated water.
We're confident. We're proud.
But there was no smile to be seen on a single Democrat's face during the speech, no matter how universal the applause line.
They didn’t seem American.
Payton McNabb is a lovely volleyball player who survived brain bleed subsequent to being injured by a transgendered male.
She was a guest of second lady Usha Vance.
Democrats just couldn’t be bothered to smile and cheer McNabb’s partial recovery.
Those are some dark and hideous hearts, to be sure.
The widow and daughters of firefighter Corey Comparatore, who was killed during the attempted assassination of President Trump, on June 13, 2024, near Butler Pennsylvania, were special guests.
Democrats sat and scowled nasty expressions for this family of a fallen first responder.
How things have changed since 9/11.
Nor did the Democrats show positive support for the families having lost members killed by illegal immigrants.
These Representatives and Senators forget that no matter by how much a percentage they won their seats, they all have constituents – now more than ever – who voted for President Trump. They do not represent the people, but rather, exhibit ugly power grabs and opportunism.
Devarjaye "DJ" Daniel, 13, is a patriotic boy and brain cancer survivor.
He is Black.
President Trump honored his strength and perseverance by having the new head of the U.S. Secret Service, Sean Curran, name him as a "new agent."
No Democrats, save honorably and beautifully acting Rep. Laura Gillen, D-N.Y., stood up for the kid.
Not only that, but it was hard to miss and extremely uncomfortable when white Reps. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, D-Fla., sat rolling their eyes and sneering at poor DJ.
Ugly, wholly unacceptable at anytime.
