Jay Leno has filed for conservatorship for his wife, Mavis Leno, who he revealed has been diagnosed with dementia.

The former "Tonight Show" host filed on Friday to establish a living trust, securing "managed assets" for Mavis' future care in case of his death, according to court documents obtained by People.

Leno stated in the filing that Mavis does not oppose the conservatorship's establishment and does not have a preference for another person to act as conservator.

Leno additionally requested the judge exempt Mavis from attending the court hearing, stating it would be "detrimental to her mental and physical health."

Mavis stood by Leno during his recovery from second and third-degree burns resulting from a gasoline fire in 2022. The incident happened as he was working on a steam engine beneath a car in his garage.

Mavis was "obviously very concerned" as he went through recovery, said Dr. Peter Grossman, a plastic surgeon and medical doctor at the Grossman Burn Center and West Hills Hospital where Leno was treated.

"She's by his side," Grossman said. "They have a very close relationship, and she's doing as well as you can expect a wife who is concerned about her husband."

Leno previously admitted during an appearance on the "Today" show that he was also concerned about his wife during the ordeal. He went against doctor's recommendations that he go straight to the Grossman Burn Center in Los Angeles and instead went home first before receiving proper treatment.

"My wife doesn't drive anymore and I didn't want her stuck and not knowing what was going on. It just seemed like the right thing to do, and I think it was," Leno explained.

"So you loved your wife more than you worried about yourself?" host Hoda Kotb asked, to which he responded, "Yeah, that's it!"
