Acclaimed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino is stepping away from directing films for his next project, with his sights set on the stage, he said in an interview with journalist Elvis Mitchell.

"If you're wondering what I'm doing right now, I'm writing a play" Tarantino said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "It's probably going to be the next thing I end up doing."

The remarks came several months after it emerged that Tarantino had scrapped "The Movie Critic," which was set to be his 10th and final film. Citing sources, Deadline reported in April that Tarantino dropped the film for no reason other than changing his mind.

Actor Brad Pitt was reportedly slated for the leading role, which would have marked their third collaboration after successful partnerships in "Inglourious Basterds" and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood."

However, changes to the script resulted in a delay in production before Tarantino scrapped the project.

During his chat with Mitchell, Tarantino expressed hesitance to "jump into production" again.

"I've been doing that for 30 years. Next month my son turns 5, and I have a 2½-year-old daughter. When I'm in America, I'm writing. When I'm in Israel? I'm an abba, which means father," he told Mitchell, said, revealing plans to wait until his son was at least 6.

"The idea of jumping on a voyage when they're too young to understand it is not enticing to me. I want to not do whatever movie I end up doing until my son is at least 6. That way he'll know what's going on, he'll be there and it will be a memory for the rest of his life."

Tarantino in 2021 revealed his plans to retire from filmmaking during an appearance on "Real Time with Bill Maher."

Maher, clearly stunned by the revelation, was quick to point out that Tarantino was "too young to quit" and was "at the top" of his game.

"That's why I want to quit," Tarantino said at the time. "Because I know film history and from here on in, directors do not get better."
