President-elect Donald Trump reportedly spoke to Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis about daughter-in-law Lara Trump being named to fill the state's expectant vacant Senate seat.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., has been nominated to be secretary of state in the incoming Trump administration, and he is expected to be confirmed by the Senate.

Once Rubio resigns from the chamber, DeSantis will be tasked with naming a replacement to serve until a special election in 2026.

Lara Trump, who is married to Eric Trump, has been mentioned as a potential contender to replace Rubio. She announced she will resign her role as co-chair of the Republican National Committee on Sunday.

The president-elect recently spoke to DeSantis and recommended Lara Trump, The Wall Street Journal reported Monday.

In her RNC role, the Lara Trump, 42, helped her father-in-law defeat Vice President Kamala Harris in the November election.

She previously explored running for Senate in her native North Carolina before moving to Florida about three years ago with her husband.

"It is something I would seriously consider," Lara Trump recently told The Associated Press about replacing Rubio in U.S. Senate.

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., Elon Musk, and his mother, Maye Musk, are among people who have suggested Lara Trump for the Senate.

However, the Journal reported it is not a given that DeSantis will pick Lara Trump. Still, her chances seemingly have improved.

Donald Trump and DeSantis, once foes in the 2024 GOP presidential primary race, appear to have patched up any differences they might have had. Their mutual friend Steve Witkoff apparently helped the two men repair their relationship.

The governor, who has been mentioned as a possible defense secretary pick if Pete Hegseth's nomination fails, is expected to attend Saturday's Army-Navy football game with the president-elect in Landover, Maryland.

DeSantis has said he would announce a decision about Rubio's replacement by early January.

Other potential picks being mentioned include Florida Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, state Attorney General Ashley Moody, former House Speaker Paul Renner, Secretary of State Cord Byrd, former House Speaker Jose Oliva, and DeSantis chief of staff James Uthmeier, NBC News reported.
