Self-Hatred: The New American Affliction

The contemporary American Left is a movement predicated on the misguided belief that all traditional American values are insupportable and ought to be replaced.

'Distilled to its essence, the Left can be identified by a single word: self-hatred. For a growing number of Americans, our country sucks.

“America has a deep, dark self-destructive secret: We hate ourselves. We hate America,” wrote Paul B. Farrell in MarketWatch. “A dangerous virus infects America’s collective unconscious,” he said. “This virus is spreading fast. Americans are consumed with self-hatred.”

“Leftists want you to think America is evil, a horribly racist nation that oppresses everyone except straight White men,” writes Aaron Kliegman at amac.us. “And anyone who defends, let alone celebrates, our country is complicit in the oppression. To the left, America is something to hate, not love, and being American is a source of shame, not pride.”

Farrell describes some of the alleged justifications for our self-hatred: Americans are racist violent, narcissistic, misogynistic. Americans don’t read, don’t work hard anymore. The American Dream is dead.

America has alienated the world. Washington is dysfunctional and corrupt. America, says Farrell, has “self-hating superpower disease” and it’s crushing our individual and collective souls.

“A new fear stalks white American Democrats,” wrote Justin Webb of the BBC at unherd.com. “They are horrified by themselves: by the colour of their skin; by the wrongs done by white people and by the system they set up.”

This self-hatred, said Webb, did not exist 10 years ago. Americans used to be proud of their country and what it stands for. The anti-Vietnam War movement of the 1960s led to a mobilization of leftist sentiment that has coalesced into the cultural insanity we have today.

It took quite a while before we noticed what was going on. The Left’s campaign didn’t surface until we elected Barack Obama president, a man who hates America and is a child of the leftist movement.

From the first day of his presidency, Obama apologized all over the world for what he perceived as America’s shortcomings and transgressions. At the core of his message, said the Heritage Foundation, was “the concept that the U.S. is a flawed nation that must seek redemption by apologizing for its past ‘sins.’”

The destructive forces set loose by Obama are coming to fruition under Biden/Harris. Our rock-solid values — primacy of individual rights over unlimited government power; freedom of speech; the rule of law; meritocracy; equality of opportunity; capitalism; the acceptance of personal responsibility — are under attack as never before.

This assault on our values would not be possible without the core belief that we are flawed as a nation and as a people.

This is not to suggest that the U.S. has achieved perfection — far from it — but “never has the core of the country been painted in such a damning light, to be derided so deeply so as to be irredeemable,” writes Taylor Lewis at freethepeople.org.

Elite American institutions have joined the self-hatred bandwagon. Academia, the media, Hollywood, and High Tech have combined in an all-out assault on American values.

What is the basis of what Lewis calls “this America-loathing pathology?”

Lewis’ answer is that America’s elite has “turned against the very country’s foundation that provided the means for their prosperity in the first place. The mid-century ideal of America, that of a dynamic nation dedicated to race-less meritocracy, personal liberty, and equality before the law, is outmoded among the modish class. Now it’s all white supremacy and systemic oppression all the time, a constant, impenetrable darkness blotting out all light.”

The Left’s fallacy lies in their intention to throw out the baby with the bathwater. This centuries-old proverb refers to eliminating something good when trying to get rid of something bad.

Making an effort to improve the country is “throwing out the bathwater,” but completely eradicating American values amounts to throwing out the “baby.” Obama and his ideological heirs believe that the U.S. is a racist country run by a cabal of immoral white people.

To correct this perceived abuse, they want the destruction of all existing political, economic, and social institutions. While change as a general proposition is desirable and inevitable, it ought not to be accomplished at the expense of everything that is good about the status quo.

Self-hatred has found a similar home in Europe. According to Douglas Murray, author of The Strange Death of Europe, cultivated self-distrust and self-hatred have come together to make Europeans unable to argue for themselves.

He thinks that European civilization as we have known it will not survive. Murray attributes this to two factors.

First is the combination of mass Muslim migration into Europe together with low European birth rates. The second is that Europe has “lost faith in its beliefs, traditions, and legitimacy."

In Murray’s view, life in Western Europe “has lost its sense of purpose. Whilst incomers will be encouraged to pursue their traditions and lifestyles, Europeans whose families have been here for generations will most likely continue to be told that theirs is an oppressive, outdated tradition, even as they constitute a smaller and smaller minority of the population.”

It sounds very similar to what is happening on this side of the Atlantic.

Self-hatred can lead to the destruction of America as we know it.

“Our economic dynamism and military might can’t overcome our own self-doubt, self-hatred, and lack of belief and confidence in America,” says Kliegman. “The manner in which Biden, his team, and their allies in the media have verbally flagellated their country is shameful and detrimental. America must recover its self-belief in order for the 21st century to be another American century and not a Chinese one.”
