Chuck Todd, former moderator of “Meet the Press,” is leaving NBC News, he told colleagues in a Friday memo, Variety reports.

Todd’s current contract with NBC News as political analyst was expected to lapse sometime after the 2024 election, and in recent weeks, he has been meeting with other news outlets, people familiar with the situation said.

“I’m pretty excited about a few new projects that are on the cusp of going from ‘pie in the sky’ to ‘near reality,’” Todd said in the memo to NBC News staffers. “So I’m grateful for the chance to get a jump start on my next chapter during this important moment.”

Todd is taking his “Chuck Toddcast” podcast with him and said he would making “an announcement about its new home soon.”

There have been reports Todd has been in talks with Washington, D.C.-based media organizations about opportunities in broadcast and digital media.

CNN anchor Jim Acosta announced earlier this week that he was leaving the Warner Bros. Discovery network to launch a Substack. Don Lemon and Megyn Kelly are two other well-known TV anchors who have also make the switch to digital media.

Todd, who was with NBC News for nearly two decades, told Variety in a 2017 interview that in order to reach Millennials and other demographic groups, journalists need to “provide depth and information in any way they want to consume it.”

In his Friday memo, Todd implied he was going to a local news outlet: “The only way to fix this information eco system is to stop whining about the various ways the social media companies are manipulating things and instead roll up our collective sleeves and start with local.

“National media can’t win trust back without having a robust partner locally, and trying to game algorithms is no way to inform and report,” Todd continued. “People are craving community, and that’s something national media or the major social media companies can’t do as well as local media.”

Todd joined NBC News in 2007 as political director. During the previous 15 years of his career, he worked at National Journal and a digital inside-the-Beltway newsletter called “The Hotline.”

NBC News named Todd chief White House correspondent in 2008 and moderator of “Meet the Press” in 2014, succeeding David Gregory. Kristin Welker took over Todd’s duties on “Meet the Press” in 2023.

Todd has never been shy about voicing his political leanings, protesting to Welker on air about NBC’s hiring of Ronna McDaniel, former chair of the Republican National Committee.

McDaniel was let go from the network as a news contributor shortly after Todd’s demonstration, as well as protests from other NBC and MSNBC journalists.
