As Winter Storm Fern barrels toward a wide swath of the U.S., from Texas to Massachusetts, desperate shoppers are getting hit with a second shock: skyrocketing prices on basic storm supplies, the New York Post reports.

From snow boots to space heaters, apparent price gouging is surging online, particularly on Amazon, where prices on cold-weather essentials have jumped sharply in just days — sometimes by more than 40% as forecasts worsen.

A look at Amazon listings using the company’s own AI shopping assistant shows how fast prices are climbing.

A pair of Amazon Essentials women’s snow boots that sold for $22.85 on Tuesday jumped to $37.10 Wednesday, then surged again to $43.70 by Thursday — a 91% spike in just 48 hours.

A one-gallon jug of Petra Pet Safe Ice Melt soared from $44.98 Tuesday to $64.99 Thursday, a 44% increase as snow totals rose.

Emergency gear isn’t spared either.

A four-pack of LED camping lanterns climbed more than $10 overnight, while rechargeable flashlights jumped nearly $9 in less than a week.

Even a best-selling space heater rose more than $6 since Wednesday night.

Parents aren’t immune. Kids’ snow bibs jumped $7 in a day, while waterproof mittens rose 25%. Even diapers saw a sudden price hike as families rushed to stock up.

Weather experts warn Winter Storm Fern could bring heavy snow, power outages, and supply shortages, making access to affordable essentials critical.

Amazon defended the pricing fluctuations, saying it has “zero tolerance for price gouging” and uses internal systems to prevent abuse, adding that prices can vary due to promotions and supply changes.

Officials in the 30-40 U.S. states expected to be impacted by the massive, 2,200-mile-wide winter storm are watching closely.

Several states, including New York, North Carolina, and South Carolina, are actively enforcing price gouging laws as the storm approaches.

New York law prohibits sellers from charging “unconscionably excessive” prices on goods vital to health and safety during emergencies — including food, water, batteries, flashlights, generators, fuel, and lodging.

“New Yorkers stocking up on necessities before a snowstorm should not have to pay higher prices,” Attorney General Letitia James has warned. “Retailers cannot raise prices on necessities during emergencies.”

Consumer advocates urge shoppers to track prices, report suspected gouging, and buy early when possible — because as Winter Storm Fern closes in, prices may keep climbing faster than the snowfall.
