As the nation approaches another fiscal deadline, the pervasive issue of government waste and fraud demands immediate attention.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has recently uncovered alarming instances of financial mismanagement across various federal agencies.
These findings, uncovered at lightning speed by Elon Musk who President Trump designated to cut government waste, present a critical challenge for U.S. House Speaker Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La.
Speaker Johnson faces the decision of whether to approve another Continuing Resolution (CR) that would inadvertently perpetuate this cycle of inefficiency.
Continuing Resolutions are temporary funding measures putting legislators in a classic political "Darned if you do, darned if you don’t" scenario, that allow federal agencies to maintain operations when formal appropriations have not been enacted.
While CRs prevent government shutdowns, they also extend previous spending levels without addressing underlying issues of waste and fraud.
This practice not only sustains inefficient programs but also undermines efforts to implement fiscal reforms.
DOGE's investigations have immediately revealed several egregious examples of wasteful spending:
Improper Payments: In the last fiscal year, the federal government reported an estimated $236 billion in improper payments alone. These errors resulting in more than a quarter trillion dollars, range from overpayments to outright fraud, highlight significant lapses in oversight and accountability.
Underutilized Federal Properties: Agencies are utilizing only a fraction of their available office space, leading to unnecessary expenditures on maintenance and utilities for unused facilities. This inefficiency persists despite the potential for cost savings through property consolidation or disposal.
Even if all of these agency offices were occupied, many are still in some of the highest rent districts in the country.
COVID-19 Relief Mismanagement: The rapid disbursement of pandemic relief funds, while viewed by some as necessary, resulted in significant fraud and misuse.
Lack of stringent oversight mechanisms allowed unscrupulous entities to exploit the system, diverting resources away from those in genuine need, such as the residents in North Carolina, some who are still living in tents and have not yet seen help from FEMA.
First-Hand Experience in Congress: As a former congressman, this writer saw firsthand the massive amount of government waste embedded in our federal budget.
Sitting on the Committee on Financial Services, the Budget Committee, and the powerful Ways and Means Committee, I witnessed how taxpayer money was squandered on projects with little to no accountability.
The sheer scale of government mismanagement shocked me then, and what I see happening today is even worse.
When this writer was in Congress, he was deeply concerned about the national debt, and that concern has only grown.
With our debt now surpassing $34 trillion, we are on a dangerous path to economic ruin if we don’t take immediate action.
We need to bring spending under control and implement real fiscal responsibility to ensure our nation remains economically solvent.
Passing CRs without addressing these issues effectively sanctions ongoing waste and fraud.
Speaker Johnson, who has championed fiscal responsibility, now faces some pivotal decisions:
Demand Accountability: Insist on comprehensive audits of federal agencies to identify and rectify instances of waste and fraud.
Implement Targeted Appropriations: Move away from blanket CRs and towards specific appropriations that fund essential services while eliminating inefficient programs.
Enhance Oversight Mechanisms: Strengthen the role of oversight bodies like DOGE to ensure continuous monitoring and evaluation of federal spending.
The American public deserves a government that exercises prudent stewardship of taxpayer dollars. By confronting the entrenched culture of waste and fraud, Speaker Johnson has the chance to lead a transformative movement towards fiscal integrity.
The decisions made in the coming weeks will not only impact the current budget but will also set a precedent for how government addresses inefficiency in the future.
It's imperative that we seize this moment to implement meaningful reforms, ensuring that federal spending aligns with the principles of accountability and effectiveness that underpin our democracy.
Otherwise, Speaker Johnson may soon find himself on the wrong end of this "DOGE Ball," a fiscal disaster ready to smack Congress — and the American people — squarely in the face.

As a four-term conservative U.S. Congressman, Jim served on the powerful Ways and Means and Budget Committees cutting government spending.
