Critical Race Theory Cancels MLK's Promissory Note

I have said that the Declaration of Independence is the ringbolt to the chain of your nation's destiny; so, indeed, I regard it. The principles contained in that instrument are saving principles. Stand by those principles, be true to them on all occasions, in all places, against all foes, and at whatever cost. -Frederick Douglass

Social justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, white privilege, white fragility, white supremacy, intersectionality, and many other like terms make up the new lexicon of the Left as it unabashedly embraces Critical Race Theory (CRT).

If you haven’t already heard of CRT, you must have just woken up from a long nap and you might want to go back to sleep. From big business to church to entertainment to government to sports, CRT is being hotly debated.

At first glance, the advocates for CRT seem well meaning as they appeal to the profound American sentiment for equality. Much of the adoption of CRT ideology, results from the deep conviction of most Americans to reject racism.

If CRT’s aim were to learn from America’s stains of the past, and to fight racism by advancing the ideals of freedom, justice, and equality for all, we would not be having this debate.

But, that is not the aim, CRT is a framework which seeks to destroy and overthrow existing systems of power by using its own version of racial discrimination against white people.

If you think I’m gaslighting, don’t take my words for it, here are the words of one the leading proponents of CRT, Ibram X Kendi,

If racial discrimination is defined as treating, considering, or making a distinction in favor or against an individual based on that person’s race, then racial discrimination is not inherently racist. The defining question is whether the discrimination is creating equity or inequity. If discrimination is creating equity, then it is antiracist….The only remedy to racist discrimination is antiracist discrimination. The only remedy to past discrimination is present discrimination.

Kendi’s proposed remedy is the creation of a Department of Antiracism which would serve as the final check and balance on the Executive, Judicial, and Legislative branches at every level of government.

This Orwellian innovation would serve as an end to the American Constitutional order, Federalism, and the Declaration of Independence. Kendi’s radical ideas, once isolated to the ivory towers of liberal universities are coming at breakneck speed to K-12 schools near you.

His advocates include the likes of the Biden Administration. From day one, Biden made his position on CRT abundantly clear by cancelling the 1776 Commission and now he is creating incentives to teach the 1619 Project.

George Orwell himself once stated, “who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past.” The 1619 Project, heavily criticized by historians for its inaccuracies, fulfills this Orwell axiom by erasing the founding, rewriting history, and eliminating the foundational structures. Already being taught at thousands of schools throughout the country, children are being taught to hate America and to reject the soaring ideals of the Declaration of Independence.

CRT’s proponents give well-meaning Americans two options, either accept CRT and its Marxist foundation or be labeled a racist. This false dilemma fallacy must be flatly denied. One can reject racism and advance equality and justice for all, while refusing CRT’s radical propositions. To be clear, America has never been perfect, slavery and Jim Crow are the greatest stains on our history. Moreover, evils exist today, as one example, there are hundreds of thousands of people who are tortured, brutalized, and enslaved in human trafficking networks within our borders.

Yet, our nation does not exist in a vacuum. There are countries where slavery is legal, where sex trafficking is sanctioned, and where poverty is suffocating. What makes America unique is not that these evils exist or existed, but that Americans of all backgrounds came together to defeat slavery, to advance the Civil Rights Act, to establish laws which punish those involved in trafficking, and to raise more people out of poverty than any other country in the world.

Rather than pursuing a world envisioned by Karl Marx, a white European revolutionary from the 19th Century, let’s look to Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, and Dr. Martin Luther King for guidance. These heroes endured some of the worst evils of America’s past, but they looked towards the Declaration of Independence and its timeless ideals as the northern star for equality.

When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. -MLK
