As we step into our 245th year as an independent nation, the attacks on America are relentless. Any sign of patriotism such as the waving of the flag, standing for the national anthem, or defending American exceptionalism, renders you as racist, imperialist, and xenophobic in the eyes of the Woke.
Woke culture demands that America be damned while other nations are extolled. As one example, Nike pays millions to American athletes who protest the American flag, while it doubles-down in its praise for nations with unspeakable human rights abuses. According to Nike CEO John Donahoe, “Nike is a brand that is of China and for China.”
Like all other nations, America is not perfect because it is made up of imperfect people. Recognition of America’s flaws and where we have fallen short relative to the soaring aims of the Declaration of Independence is a necessary and worthwhile assessment.
However, there is a major difference between critiquing to improve and criticizing to destroy.
Unfortunately the Woke Left views American institutions and our founding documents as irredeemably racist. Like anorexia, no change of image will ever satisfy. Other nations don’t seem to have this issue.
Where are the athletes bowing their heads in shame while their national anthems are played? Surely the athletes of China, Iran, or Venezuela have cause for protest.
For several years, I had the amazing opportunity to create micro-businesses in places like Central America, East Africa, and Asia. I will never forget seeing the children in Nairobi slums sniff glue to ease their hunger pains, or meeting brave Christian leaders who rescued young girls from rural Indian villages where sex trafficking was sanctioned, or listening to Rwanda President Paul Kagame describe the horrific 1994 Rwanda genocide.
On my long plane rides home, I often pondered the differences between these nations and my nation. A brief survey of history made me recognize that oppression, poverty, and slavery were the norm and remain the norm for hundreds of millions of people today.
My curiosity led me into a five-year personal study of the American founding and the cast of characters who made it possible. In a world where injustice reigned, where might made right, where wealth was accessible only by birth or conquest, the experiment which was to be America had little chance of producing anything different.
While one could cite many factors which led to America’s unprecedented success, without question the Declaration of Independence cast the vision of equality before the law, self-governance, and God-given inalienable rights.
As stated by Abraham Lincoln, this north star of liberty must be 'constantly approximated.' The moment in which we lose sight or make claims inconsistent with this vision, is the moment in which we regress to the mean of despotism.
History has produced formidable enemies who fought to destroy the Declaration of Independence.
Slavery advocates, such as John C. Calhoun, looked to abolish the Declaration of Independence because slavery rejects equality.
Fascists Axis Powers sought to destroy the American ideal of the freedom of self-governance.
Communist nations, old and new, defy God-given rights giving this power instead to the all-powerful State.
Many generations of Americans hence, the ideological battles that are being fought on our soil are not new, but they are different.
The dividing lines are not state or national borders, rather they are amorphous cultural ideologies which have reach into all our lives. The Left’s monopoly on cultural institutions such as big business, government, Hollywood, media, sports, and government has legitimized the ideas of those who seek to abolish the aims of the Declaration of Independence.
Indeed, the stakes are high. Freedom came with a price, and the signers of the Declaration of Independence understood that the God-given inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness needed to be secured. The securing came through their willingness to surrender their Lives, Fortunes, and Sacred Honor.
Either we will approximate the shining beacon of the Declaration of Independence, which many millions have fought and died for, or we will step into the dark abyss of totalitarianism where might makes right, where entire groups of people are dehumanized, and where faith is assailed as an enemy of the State.
