Dems Would Do Well to Not Engage With Trump's Popularity

Donald Trump understands, better than any other American political figure, the importance of choosing your enemies.

His administration is ensnared in a blizzard of lawsuits, his every decision triggering a new leftist attempt at using the courts to thwart the will of the people. The injunctions, stays and other legal impediments stopping his efforts to downsize government, punish and deport illegals, and block men from participating in girls’ sports just bolster his popularity.

The lawsuits he is facing are almost all contesting executive actions of which most Americans approve.

The injunctions may be slowing him down, but they are not hurting him politically. In fact, the drumbeat of adverse court rulings permits him to cast himself permanently as a lonely defender of American values in a sea of radicals and leftists.

The most important of the lawsuits he faces fall into three categories:

  1. Efforts to block deportation of criminal illegal immigrants now in the country.
  2. Proposals to cut the federal bureaucracy, shutter agencies and slice spending.
  3. Eliminating social policies of the left that would obliterate the differences between the sexes and create a new social order funded by the federal government.

In all three areas, Donald Trump stands solidly with the vast bulk of the American people. Each lawsuit, each injunction, is not a defeat or a reversal; it is a way for Trump to remind his base of the battles he is waging and to keep them in the headlines.

Beyond the judicial assaults on Trump and his policies, he is subject to second-guessing by an array of economists warning that his policies will lead to inflation, slower growth and job loss.

Here again, he is suffering slings and arrows for doing what Americans feel is the right thing. Everyone agrees that foreign nations are ripping us off with unfair trade practices, and the litany of closed, rusty factories in our cities proves it.

The fact is that the two months of the Trump administration have been marked by zero inflation and mega job growth. The warnings by self-interested consultants and lobbyists have proven to be false as Trump moves from triumph to triumph.

The Democrats, desperate to restore some momentum to their cause, will not succeed if they just engage Trump when he is trying to do popular things. Their lawsuits, warnings, and attacks just help Trump by drawing attention to how steadfastly he speaks up for the American people.
