Disgraced Ex-Senator Franken to Play Fictional Version

By    |   Thursday, 08 February 2024 11:37 AM EST

Al Franken will return to his acting and legislative roots by playing a senator in the upcoming Netflix series "The Resistance," Deadline reported.

Franken will play a fictional U.S. Senator Aaron Filkins from Washington state. The series is part of the Shondaland universe and is described as a "zany whodunit revolving around the inner workings of the White House."

Production on the Netflix comedic murder-mystery drama series had been paused due to the writers strike but has recently resumed. Andre Braugher, who was playing a detective on the series, passed away in December. He is to be replaced by Giancarlo Esposito.

Franken, a Democrat who served in Minnesota, fell out of favor with the progressive left at the apex of the #metoo movement, but has stayed active in the opinion business with frequently media appearances and a podcast. In 2017, multiple people accused Franken of sexual impropriety, leading to his resignation from the Senate.

He recently guest hosted for "The Daily Show," where he and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., placed a friendly wager on former President Trump's reelection chances.

Franken plans to try out a new comedy stand-up routine this summer, according to his X account.
