Apple CEO Tim Cook will personally donate $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump’s inaugural committee, Axios reported on Friday.
Last month, Cook met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago over dinner to discuss the incoming president’s agenda. Cook was unique among tech execs during Trump’s first term as he sought to maintain a close relationship with the White House to aid the company in their various international legal battles. The company is not expected to donate despite being the largest tax payer in the U.S. and the world, the outlet noted.
Trump has been open to Cook’s concerns of European regulation in the past and had an ear with the president-elect’s daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law Jared Kushner. In October, Trump and Cook discussed a $2 billion fine levied on Apple by Europe over the App Store in March. Regulators in the EU accused Apple of thwarting competition among music streaming rivals, most notably Spotify, and their role as gatekeepers of the App Store.
The Apple CEO who is from Alabama, believes the inauguration is a great American tradition, and is donating to the inauguration in the spirit of unity, according to sources.
Cook received some push back after he congratulated Trump on his presidential victory posting, “We look forward to engaging with you and your administration to help make sure the United States continues to lead with and be fueled by ingenuity, innovation, and creativity.”
