Sen. Moreno Jokes About Musk-Dems 'Terrible Breakup'

By    |   Thursday, 27 March 2025 02:09 PM EDT

Sen. Bernie Moreno, R-Ohio, on Thursday joked that pop star Taylor Swift will write a song about the "terrible breakup" between Elon Musk and Democrats.

"What a terrible breakup between the left and Elon Musk," Moreno said during a Senate Banking Committee hearing after Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., referred to Musk as "co-president."

"I'm convinced Taylor Swift is going to write a song about this someday," he added.

Musk, a billionaire overseeing the Trump administration's effort to shrink the federal government, has drawn the ire of Democrats.

Warren called for a probe into possible ethics violations by Musk and his chief lieutenants as they gutted the consumer protection agency she first proposed.

"If Mr. Musk has taken actions in his federal role that will benefit his financial interests without receiving appropriate waivers and approvals, he may have violated the criminal conflict of interest statute," Warren wrote to inspector general Mark Bialek on Wednesday. "Special government employees are also subject to the "Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch."

DOGE employees are also subject to federal conflicts of interest laws," she added.
