House Dems Call on Biden to Secure US Border

By    |   Thursday, 09 May 2024 12:11 PM EDT

House Democrats are calling on President Joe Biden to secure the U.S.-Mexico border, arguing that Republicans would rather "see the crisis continue and use it as a campaign ad instead of actually addressing this national security issue."

"It has become clear that the current situation remains untenable, but with Republicans playing politics on border security, it is time for your administration to act," the letter from 15 Democrats said. "We urge you to use all tools at your disposal, including executive action, to better address security at the Southern border, interdict illicit fentanyl and allow for orderly legal immigration."

The document was signed by lawmakers from Minnesota, Arizona, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Michigan, among others.

The report comes a day after more than 80 lawmakers signed a letter urging Biden to "take all available actions to streamline pathways to lawful status for undocumented immigrants" ahead of the November election.

"Deporting all such individuals — as former President Donald Trump has threatened to do if reelected — would devastate the American economy and destroy American families," they added.

White House spokesperson Angelo Fernández Hernández in a response told CBS News that "congressional Republicans chose to put partisan politics ahead of our national security, and rejected what border agents have said they need."

"We continue to call on Speaker Johnson and House Republicans to pass the bipartisan deal to secure the border," he added.
