23 Facts About Accused CEO Killer You Should Know

Luigi Nicholas Mangione, 26, was arrested Monday in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Hours later he was charged in last week's shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

Below is a list of facts known, based on police statements and media reports, about Mangione:

  1. Grandson of a wealthy, self-made real estate developer and philanthropist and cousin of a current Maryland state legislator.
  2. Valedictorian at an elite Baltimore prep school where his 2016 graduation speech lauded his classmates' "incredible courage to explore the unknown and try new things."
  3. University of Pennsylvania graduate.
  4. Registered as unaffiliated with a political party.
  5. Lived at Surfbreak, a "co-living" space at the edge of Honolulu tourist mecca Waikiki, in 2022.
  6. Has ties to San Francisco.
  7. Worked for the car-buying website TrueCar and left in 2023.
  8. Criminally cited last year by the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources for going into an area that was closed inside a state park.
  9. Suffered severe back pain from childhood that interfered with many aspects of his life.
  10. Traveled between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia after the shooting.
  11. Arrested at a McDonald's restaurant after being recognized by a customer following a five-day manhunt.
  12. Arrest followed police finding the assassin's backpack at Central Park and discovered Monopoly money inside.
  13. Arraigned in Pennsylvania on two felony charges (forgery and carrying a firearm without a license) and three misdemeanors (tampering with records or identification, possessing instruments of crime, and providing false identification to law enforcement).
  14. Did not enter a plea at his first court appearance Monday night.
  15. Held at the State Correctional Institution in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.

  22. Favorably reviewed online the book-length manifesto of "Unabomber'' Ted Kaczynski.
  23. Received support on social media for striking a blow against the nation's healthcare system.
