The suspect in the execution-style murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson last week specifically mentioned UnitedHealthcare by name in the 262-word manifesto that police say was in Luigi Mangione’s possession when he was arrested Monday in Pennsylvania, according to the New York Police Department.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the handwritten document speaks to Mangione’s “motivation and mindset.”
The two-page manifesto, which police attribute to Mangione, noted that while UHC’s market capitalization has grown, the life expectancy in the United States has not.
"He raises the question, you know, Why do we have the most expensive healthcare in the world, but we're rated 42 in life expectancy around the world?” intelligence analyst John Miller told CNN on Monday. “I can't vet his facts or findings there, but it was talking about the healthcare industry and the need for violence, especially when you talk about the opening, which is, that it had to be done. 'These parasites had it coming.'"
Mangione also took direct responsibility for the murder of Thompson, without mentioning the late executive by name, law enforcement said.
“To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone,” read the manifesto, The New York Times reported.
Further, the document assails healthcare companies that “continue to abuse our country for immense profit because the American public has allowed them to get away with it.”
The manifesto condemned UHC and healthcare companies in general for putting profits above care.
"He does make some indication that he's frustrated with the healthcare system in the United States,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said on ABC News’ “Good Morning America” show. “He was writing a lot about his disdain for corporate American and in particular the healthcare industry," he added.
Kenny said the manifesto is currently in the possession of the Altoona, Pennsylvania, police department.
