Lawmakers and officials across the country took to social media Wednesday to express shock and offer prayers for conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot at an event in Utah.
Kirk, a prominent pro-Trump figure and founder of Turning Point USA, was wounded at the event at Utah Valley University, according to a source familiar with the matter. The extent of his injuries was not immediately clear.
The shooting drew swift reactions on X from top Republicans and public officials who praised Kirk's work and urged prayers for his recovery.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said he was stunned by the attack.
"@charliekirk11 is a good friend—we've been friends since he was a teenager—and a courageous leader. Heidi & I are praying for Charlie right now. May God's healing hand be upon him," he wrote.
Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, posted, "Pls join me in praying for Charlie Kirk."
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., wrote, "Please join us in praying for our good friend, Charlie Kirk."
Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., added: "Please pray for my friend @charliekirk11 and his family."
Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, posted: "We're all praying for Charlie Kirk. God bless him."
Kirk has become one of the most recognizable conservative media personalities in the United States, amassing millions of followers and building Turning Point USA into a force on high school and college campuses since its founding in 2012.
The FBI confirmed it is monitoring the situation.
"We are closely monitoring reports of the tragic shooting involving Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University. Our thoughts are with Charlie, his loved ones, and everyone affected," FBI Director Kash Patel said in a post on X.
Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said he had been briefed by law enforcement on the attack and pledged accountability.
"Those responsible will be held fully accountable. Violence has no place in our public life. Americans of every political persuasion must unite in condemning this act. Our prayers are with Charlie, his family, and all those affected," Cox said.
