China is building a wartime military command center in Beijing that would be 10 times bigger than the U.S. Pentagon, U.S. intelligence officials told Financial Times.
FT, citing satellite images, reported the command center is being built on 1,500 acres; the Pentagon sits on 33.8 acres. Further, the Chinese structure will include hardened bunkers to protect Chinese military leaders during a war, including nuclear, according to Thursday's report.
Renny Babiarz, a former imagery analyst at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, told Financial Times that analysis "suggests the construction of several possible underground facilities linked via possible underground passageways."
The structure, construction for which began in the middle of 2024, has been dubbed "Beijing Military City" by U.S. intelligence analysts, according to the report.
"If confirmed, this new advanced underground command bunker for the military leadership, including President Xi [Jinping] as the chairman of the Central Military Commission, signals Beijing's intent to build not only a world-class conventional force but also an advanced nuclear warfighting capability," Dennis Wilder, the former head of China analysis for the CIA, told FT.
The Chinese embassy in Washington, D.C., meanwhile, told FT it was "not aware of the details."
China, it added, was "committed to the path of peaceful development and a defense policy that is defensive in nature," according to FT.
