The Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee on Tuesday announced plans to invest $100,000 in two Northern Virginia state legislature special elections scheduled for January, The Hill reported.
Although Democrats are expected to win the contests for the 32nd state Senate district and the 26th state House district, the DLCC insists that the elections could set the tone for what is expected to be a competitive election year in Virginia — with the positions of governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, and state House up for grabs in the coming year.
Both districts are located in Loudoun County, near Washington, D.C., in Northern Virginia. While the region is acknowledged as solidly Democrat, Vice President Kamala Harris last month in the presidential election underperformed the margins that President Joe Biden won by four years ago, according to The Hill.
The DLCC said in a statement that "the stakes couldn't be higher as we approach the first special elections of 2025. We must preserve our majorities to lead the upcoming legislative agenda and position Democrats for success heading into November's elections. ... We know the importance of early investments in laying the foundation for success, which is why we're building the infrastructure now — not next year — for Democratic power in Virginia.”
The contest in the 32nd state Senate district, which was left vacant by Democratic Rep.-elect Suhas Subramanyam, pits State Del. Kannan Srinivasan, a Democrat, against Republican Tumay Harding.
In the 26th state House district, Democrat J.J. Singh is running against Republican Ram Venkatachalam.
