Defense cuts by the Obama administration are causing the United States to lose its technical edge, former Vice President Dick Cheney says.
"If I look on the threat on the one hand and our capability to deal with it on the other, I see a significant mismatch," Cheney said in an interview broadcast Monday on Fox News Channel's
"Hannity."
"We have had technical superiority in several key military areas since the end of World War II: stealth, precision-guided munitions, the best battle tank ever invented," Cheney said.
"That edge is going away."
America isn't modernizing its strategic forces the way that the Chinese and the Russians are because of significant cuts to the defense budget, Cheney said.
The Defense Department represents 17 percent of the federal budget yet received 50 percent of overall budget cuts in the sequester.
"The other thing that occurs to me that's very important," Cheney said, "is the image we are presenting to the world, to our adversaries, of weakness."
Cheney's new book, written with his daughter, Liz, is called,
"Exceptional: Why the World Needs a Powerful America," published by Threshold Editions.
