Trump: Obama and I 'Probably Do' Like Each Other

By    |   Friday, 10 January 2025 08:21 AM EST

There has been a lot of contention between President-elect Donald Trump and former President Barack Obama over the years, but Trump said Thursday, after the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter, that they "probably do" like each other.

His comments came after a viral video of the two presidents speaking with each other and sharing a laugh at the state funeral, reports NBC News.

"I didn't realize how friendly it looked," Trump told a reporter at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida on Thursday.

"I said, 'Boy, they look like two people that like each other.' And we probably do," Trump added. "We have a little different philosophies, right? But we probably do. I don't know. We just got along. But I got along with just about everybody."

Trump added he, Obama, and the other former and current leaders attending the funeral "met backstage" before they were seated, and "we all got along very well."

Trump was also asked what he and Obama talked about, but he did not elaborate.

Obama, meanwhile, hasn't commented publicly about their conversation.

Trump and Obama have often criticized each other, including with Trump spreading the "birther" theory about Obama and asserting that he wasn't born in the United States.

He has also called Obama an "ineffective" and "terrible" president and referred to Michelle Obama, who did not attend the Carter funeral, as "nasty" in October.

The Obamas also slammed Trump during last year's presidential campaign.

Obama said Trump was a "78-year-old billionaire who has not stopped whining about his problems since he rode down his golden escalator nine years ago," and his wife said the consequences of him being reelected would be "brutally serious."

However, Obama and Trump have also spoken well of each other at times.

In August, Trump told CNN that he liked Obama, that he respected him and his wife, and that he believed the former president was a "nice gentleman."

Obama, who welcomed Trump to the White House in 2016 after his first win, told reporters then that they had a "wide-ranging" and "excellent" conversation.

Trump, meanwhile, told Obama after their meeting that "It was a great honor being with you."
