President Donald Trump was unmoved over reports that the European Union is mulling a plan to ban certain produce grown in the United States, saying, "Let them do it."
Soybeans grown in the U.S. could be the first affected under the EU's plan, a document that was leaked and reported on last weekend.
"That's all right. I don't mind. Let them do it. Let them do it," Trump told reporters Sunday, according to The Hill. "They're just hurting themselves if they do that. I can't imagine it, but it doesn't matter," he added.
The European Commission this week is expected to place limits on U.S. food items that are grown using pesticides banned from use in Europe, according to the report. The ban on U.S. produce would help EU farmers, according to the "Vision for the Future of Agriculture" document that was leaked.
"The Commission will pursue, in line with international rules, a stronger alignment of production standards applied to imported products, notably on pesticides and animal welfare," read the document.
The ban would be in response to Trump's signing of a presidential memo last week that jump-started a review on his proposal for reciprocal tariffs. It's expected Trump will impose the tariffs in a matter of weeks.
"On Trade, I have decided, for purposes of Fairness, that I will charge a RECIPROCAL Tariff meaning, whatever Countries charge the United States of America, we will charge them — No more, no less!" Trump wrote Monday afternoon on X.
