SurveyUSA Poll: Trump Holds 7-to-1 Lead on GOP Field

By    |   Thursday, 05 October 2023 02:05 PM EDT

Former President Donald Trump's 2024 Republican primary polling lead is so large that pollsters now are presenting the runaway lead in large ratios instead of points.

Trump's 56-point lead on Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis in the latest SurveyUSA poll was published as greater than a "7:1 margin." Trump pulled a large 65% majority support and the rest of the field was in single digits at nine points or less.

"Former President Donald Trump would crush the seven candidates who participated in the second Republican debate last week, defeating his closest competitor, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, by a 7:1 margin," the poll analysis read.

"Trump would take an absolutely overwhelming 65% of the vote, including majorities of every key Republican voting bloc. None of his opponents are in double-digits, and even within the subgroups that are most likely to support them, nobody exceeds 14% in any meaningful group."

DeSantis polled strongest among voters 65 and older (12%) — but he trails Trump there by 45 points — and in the U.S. mountain states region (12%) where he trails Trump by 47 points, according to the poll.

Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy pulled 14% support among moderates, but he still trails Trump in that demographic by 38 points.

A smaller number of registered Democrats who say they will vote in the GOP primary support former Vice President Mike Pence at 15%, but Trump leads in that demo by 26 points.

The full results of the nationwide poll:

  1. Trump 65%
  2. DeSantis 9%
  3. Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy 8%
  4. Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley 5%
  5. Former Vice President Mike Pence 4%
  6. Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie 3%
  7. Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., 2%
  8. North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum 1%

There were 3% undecided.

SurveyUSA polled 3,400 adults using Lucid Holdings LLC of New Orleans from Sept. 20 to Oct. 3, including 2,759 registered voters, 2,330 likely November 2024 general election voters, 1,055 likely Republican primary or caucus voters. No margins of error were provided in the poll methodology.
