Trump: Use 25th Amendment to Oust Biden

By    |   Tuesday, 12 September 2023 09:35 AM EDT

Former President Donald Trump wants Republicans in Congress to use the 25th Amendment to get President Joe Biden out of office for not being able to do his job.

"Because of the rigged and stolen 2020 presidential election, just look at our Nation, and indeed the world, now," Trump posted on his Truth Social platform Monday. "It is all a shadow of its former self. Ukraine, inflation, bad economy, woke military, no world standing, no respect, and today, $6 billion for hostages [in Iran]. Where is the call from Republicans for the 25th Amendment?"

The Biden administration announced Monday that it is using a "blanket waiver" to allow international banks to transfer $6 billion in frozen Iranian assets from South Korea to Qatar to circumvent current U.S. financial sanctions and will release five Iranian citizens held in the U.S., in return for the release of five Americans being held in that nation, the Associated Press reported.

According to the AP, Secretary of State Antony Blinken signed off on the deal last week, but Congress was not notified until Monday.

"It's ridiculous for US to be blackmailed into paying $6B for hostages which will help indirectly finance the number 1 foreign policy of Iran: terrorism," Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said in a social media post Monday.

Through his post, Trump is calling on Republicans to use the Constitution's 25th Amendment oust Biden from power for his incapacity to serve.

According to the U.S. Congress website, "the 25th Amendment was an effort to resolve some of the continuing issues revolving about the office of the President; that is, what happens upon the death, removal, or resignation of the President and what is the course to follow if for some reason the President becomes disabled to such a degree that he cannot fulfill his responsibilities."

Discussed several times by Democrats during Trump's tenure in office, the events of Jan. 6, 2021, led Maryland Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin to introduce a resolution in the House to use the amendment, specifically for Trump's Cabinet and then-Vice President Mike Pence to declare Trump of being unable to fulfill his duties and force him from office, NPR reported at the time.

The Democrat majority House passed the resolution along party lines 223-205 with only one Republican, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., joining the Democrats.
