President Donald Trump, whose relationship with Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., became frayed in the past month, responded favorably Friday night to Greene's announcement that she will resign her House seat on Jan. 5.
ABC News posted on X that it spoke to Trump by phone about Greene's resignation and he said, "I think it's great news for the country. It's great."
Asked if she gave him advance notice of her decision, Trump said, "Nah, it doesn't matter, you know, but I think it's great. I think she should be happy."
Greene was first elected in 2020 and positioned herself as a die-hard Trump supporter until the two parted ways on a number of issues, including the release of Department of Justice files on the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Her resignation followed Trump's withdrawal of his endorsement and public criticism of her political approach, calling her a "ranting lunatic" and a "traitor."
In a post on Truth Social on Sunday night, Trump escalated his feud with Greene.
"Wacky Marjorie 'Traitor' Brown (Remember, Green turns to Brown where there is ROT involved!) is working overtime to try and portray herself as a victim when, in actuality, she is the cause of all of her own problems," Trump wrote. "The fact is nobody cares about this traitor to our country!"
In a video and statement she posted online, filmed from her home in Georgia, Greene said that if she had been cast aside by "MAGA Inc," it was indicative that "many common Americans have been cast aside and replaced as well."
Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., a frequent Trump critic who worked with Greene on a discharge petition to force a House vote on legislation to release the Epstein documents — Trump signed the bill on Wednesday — said he will "miss her tremendously."
"I'm very sad for our country but so happy for my friend Marjorie," Massie wrote on X. "I'll miss her tremendously. She embodies what a true Representative should be. Everyone should read her statement; there's more honesty expressed in these four pages than most politicians will speak in a lifetime."
Steve Bannon, a White House strategist in Trump's first term and host of the "War Room" podcast, told The New York Times, "We haven't seen or heard" the last of Greene.
"The House is not big enough for her ambitions or personality," Bannon said. "She had her committee assignments pulled by Pelosi in her first term — and rose to be a national figure. We haven't seen or heard the last of MTG."
