Trump: 'Good Chance of Winning New York'

By    |   Thursday, 25 April 2024 10:27 AM EDT

Former President Donald Trump, speaking to construction workers in midtown Manhattan early Monday on his way to his trial proceedings, said he will "make a play for New York" and possibly defeat President Joe Biden there in this year's presidential election.

"Biden is the worst president in history, and we have some very bad people here, but we have the greatest people, and they're right behind me, and they all want us to run, and we're going to run very hard in New York," Trump said, reported The Guardian. "We have a good chance of winning New York, in my opinion. We're going to give it a shot."

No Republican presidential candidate has won in New York state since Ronald Reagan in 1984. Biden defeated Trump by more than 20 percentage points in New York in 2020.

Trump was seen on video speaking with construction workers at about 6:30 a.m. on 48th Street and Park Avenue, telling them he "did nothing wrong. It's a political witch hunt. It's election interference, that's all it is."

The crowd at one point started chanting "USA! USA!" in response to Trump, the New York Post reported.

Some of the supporters there said they woke up early to see Trump.

Attorneys for Trump also will deliver arguments to the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday in his presidential immunity defense, but the former president will be in New York City, where Judge Juan Merchan has ordered that he be present every day for his court proceedings.

Trump faces 34 felony counts on accusations of falsifying business records, allegedly to cover hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels, who claims they had an affair. Trump has denied her claims.
