CNN Poll: Americans Divided on Trump's Next Term

Americans are, according to a CNN poll conducted by SSRS, closely divided on their outlooks for President-elect Donald Trump's second term.

The poll found that 52% of adults have positive feelings, while 48% were negative.

For Americans who express enthusiasm or optimism, one of the biggest drivers is that Trump will improve the economy. For Americans who are pessimistic about it, they are most likely to be concerned about Trump's character, as well as worries of rising bigotry or weakened democracy.

However, 29% of Americans say they're not only pessimistic but afraid, while only 19% call themselves not just optimistic but enthusiastic. These numbers are somewhat similar to CNN's polling after former President Barack Obama was reelected president in 2012, where 15% of Americans called themselves enthusiastic and 29% called themselves afraid.

Opinions were divided on partisan lines. 93% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents expressed a positive outlook, and 85% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents expressed a negative outlook. Opinions are also more positive among Americans without college degrees at 58%, white Americans at 57%, and Hispanic Americans at 53% than those who've graduated college at 40% or Black Americans at 25%.

The poll was conducted from Dec. 5th-8th among a random national sample of 1,011 adults drawn from a probability-based panel. Surveys were either by telephone with a live interviewer or conducted online.
