Trump: Supporters Can't Get Near Courthouse

By    |   Monday, 13 May 2024 10:24 AM EDT

Former President Donald Trump on Monday morning said his supporters are being kept far away from the Manhattan courthouse where his criminal trial is being held.

Trump spoke upon arrival at the courthouse and before Judge Juan Merchan began the day's proceedings.

"What this judge is getting away with is disgraceful, including the fact that we have thousands of people … we had a hundred thousand people in New Jersey ... they would like to show their support," said Trump, who held a huge rally in Wildwood, New Jersey, on Saturday.

"It is like an armed camp outside. You can't get one person within three blocks of this courthouse."

Sens. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, and Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., stood among people behind Trump as the former president spoke to reporters.

Trump also referred to new New York Times/Siena College/Philadelphia Inquirer polls that showed him leading President Joe Biden in five of six key swing states.

"The big thing today seems to be The Times," Trump said. "I'm sure The Times is thrilled but I respect them for at least letting it come out and there it is: Trump leading by a lot in every state. Every swing state, leading by a lot."

Trump added that he "should be out campaigning now instead of sitting in a very cold courthouse all day long."

"This is a Biden prosecution," Trump said. "It is election interference at a level that nobody in this country has ever seen before. This is for the third-world country, not for the USA."

Trump has been accused of falsifying business documents to hide hush-money payments to adult film actor Stormy Daniels.

The prosecution alleges Daniels was paid to keep quiet before the 2016 election about an affair with Trump.
