Stefanik: Dems Out to 'Cheat and Steal' '24 NY Election

By    |   Friday, 16 June 2023 03:03 PM EDT

House Republican Conference chair Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., on Friday told the Washington Examiner that Democrats are making attempts at "illegally gerrymandering" in New York.

Stefanik criticized Democrats for their redistricting efforts in a statement: "Far-left corrupt Democrats are attempting to cheat and steal the 2024 election in New York by illegally gerrymandering congressional lines to benefit Democrats at the expense of hardworking New Yorkers."

Democrats argue that New York's current congressional map is in violation of the state's constitution, specifically a mandate that the district lines be drawn by the Independent Redistricting Commission. If the first two of that group's proposals are rejected by the legislature, then the lawmakers are able to draw their own map.

Last year, the commission did not issue a second proposal, which allowed Democrats to draw their own map. The map was rejected by the state Appeals Court as being in violation of anti-gerrymandering regulations.

Democrats hope to revisit this issue after DiFiore resigned and was replaced with a more liberal judge last week, according to the Examiner.
