Musk: Letting 'Flood' of 'Unvetted People' Into US 'Insane'

By    |   Wednesday, 17 April 2024 02:40 PM EDT

Tech billionaire Elon Musk sounded off on social media about the number of illegal immigrants that have entered the United States during President Joe Biden's administration.

"More than the population of 36 states in just over 3 years!" Musk wrote in a post on X on Tuesday. "I am very much in favor of legal immigration, being an immigrant myself, but allowing a flood of millions of unvetted people to enter the United States illegally is insane."

Musk, a South African immigrant, was responding to a post by conservative commentator Ashley St. Clair, which claimed 7.2 million illegal immigrants have arrived in the U.S. since Biden took office in 2021.

"Over 1,000 of them took over NYC City Hall Park here to protest being sent to shelters and they are demanding permanent housing," St. Clair said, including a picture of herself holding a sign that read "7.2 million" with what appeared to be foreign nationals in the background.

According to Customs and Border Protection, more than 9.5 million migrants have illegally crossed into the country, as of the most recent data from March.

This isn't the first time Musk has raised concerns about the hazards of illegal immigration.

In February, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO sounded the alarm about the massive influx of illegal immigrants that he said is "crushing the country."

"Dams are bursting all over the country," Musk wrote at the time. "America is only 4% of Earth's population. If only 1% of the rest of Earth moves here, that would crush all essential services."

"I am ringing the alarm bell, because the flood of illegals is crushing the country!" he added.

In an opinion piece for Newsmax last month, Larry Bell, endowed professor of space architecture at the University of Houston, said there should not be "any wonder why Senate Democrats recently voted unanimously to defeat an amendment by Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn, to bar illegal immigrants from being counted along with lawful citizens."

"By way of background, census counts including both citizens and noncitizens dating back to 1790 have been used to apportion seats in the House of Representatives, with states gaining or losing based on population changes over the previous decade since survey data is collected every 10 years," Bell wrote.

Therefore, he explained, states "registering large numbers of illegal aliens and other non-citizens … gain additional representation in Congress at the expense of those with fewer since the overall total number was fixed by law following the 1910 census at 435 members."

Each state receives one seat, with the remainder being assigned "according to a complex formula based on relative population size."
